Busta Settles in Assault Suit

On Monday (May 21), Busta Rhymes reached a settlement in a lawsuit filed against him by a man who says he was assaulted by the rapper and his bodyguard in a Manhattan deli in 2005. According to the New York Post, Busta reached the agreement just one day before he was due in Manhattan Supreme Court to defend himself to Justice Emily Jane Goodman against a default judgment that was handed down in the case last year. Melvin Smith, who claims to have been beaten by the controversial rapper, was awarded $100,000 after Busta failed to respond to the suit. The rapper explained that he was unaware of the case because he did not reside at the Long Island home where a process server delivered the related legal papers. “While I own the property, I have no access to it,” Busta said in an affidavit filed recently. He explained that the Baldwin, Long Island home is a residence that he provides for his three children and their mother. He also asserted that he did not assault Smith. The details of the settlement were not revealed.

Two Companies Representing Eminem’s Management Sue Aftermath, Interscope over Digital Download Revenue

On Monday (May 21), two management companies that represent Eminem filed suit against Aftermath Records, Interscope Records, Universal Music Group Recordings and ARY Inc. claiming they are owed revenue from digital downloads of the rapper’s music. According to The Tennessean, Detroit based F.B.T. Productions LLC and Em2M LLC say they are entitled to a 50% share of any revenue generated from downloads of Em’s music, but are currently receiving only a 12% cut. An audit that was completed in February estimates that the two companies were owed $650,000, and that amount has now reached $1 million. “We are bringing this action based upon the specific language of our contracts with UMG,” said attorney Richard Busch of Nashville law firm King & Ballow, who are representing Em’s management team. According to the suit, which was filed in Los Angeles federal court, the parties are seeking a court order confirming their right to 50% of money earned from digital downloads and ringtone sales, as well as compensation for lost revenue.

Kanye speaks on new tour, other projects

No dates have been set yet, but according to MTV, superstar rapper Kanye West’s new tour will be called “Glow In The Dark”. As the follow-up to his successful Touch the sky tour, Ye plans to go outside the box once again.

He also plans to change it up graphically as well, as he’s been seen hanging with Japanese art legend Takashi Murakami. Takashi, most well known for his Louis Vuitton rainbow design, will be handling the bulk of designs for Kanye’s upcoming album, and has done the cover for Ye’s latest single, “Can’t Tell Me Nothin”. Apparently, Murakami is also the mind behind Wests new chain-charm as well.
“He did a three-minute animated piece for one of the songs.” said Kanye. “Murakami, his work has been stunning to me because pop art is really expressive, representative and expressive and emotional, and it looks like something you can do yourself. [But] you cannot do no Murakami shit yourself. You cannot do this at home. He has this studio out in Japan that has 30 artists working at one time. I love Japanese culture and I was always into art, and Murakami is really a god in the art world.”

“I’ve heard people come up to him and say, ‘You’re becoming more godlike every day,’ ” added West. “Every single that’s coming out for my album, he did the artwork for the covers. ... And all the merchandising for the new album is Murakami.”

West is not only working on finishing “Graduation”, but he is also collaborating with New Orleans artist Lil Wayne for his next Lp “Tha Carter 3”.

“I’m making beats. The dude is the hottest rapper,” ‘Ye said of Weezy. “We already made some songs that are incredible. I’m not going to tell you who’s on them, but I can talk my sh—, ‘cause we already got a couple of bangers under the belt. Hopefully I can deliver some product with him to push it to MTV even more, where hopefully he’ll be opening up some award shows and getting his rightful spot.

“Right now he’s ripping down every mixtape, going crazy with it. It’s unabashed, raw lyrics. I think it’s the realest form of hip-hop right now.”

Interscope/Shady Records' newest imported talent goes by the name of Ca$his and he's ready for his close-up...but first, Shady Records is testing the waters with this special 8-track EP, making 'The County Hound EP' one of the first full-length EPs in recent memory. Mixtape Inc.
The Mixtape Documentary
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Nearly five years in the making, 'Mixtape Inc.' is the product of Walter Bell, a New York City documentarian whose passion for mixtapes and skills with the film reel led to this idea for a documentary. Taking you behind-the-scenes of the mixtape game, this documentary couldn't come at a funnier time for mixtapes. With the recent arrest of DJ Drama and Don Cannon, this DVD documentary's significance is heightened incredibly in the current mixtape climate.

DESCRIPTION FROM THE PRODUCER: There’s a battle brewing with the Mixtape DJs, Performers, Retailers and Buyers on one side and the multi-billion dollar record labels and copyright infringement authorities (RIAA) on the other. Mixtapes have become an important and hot part of the Hip-Hop culture, revolutionized the Hip-Hop music industry and changed the way we hear and buy Hip-Hop music. The financial stakes are extremely high. These entrepreneurial compilations are now the root of a new power struggle, the urban streets of America vs. the traditional corporate music industry.

Kanye West’s new single “Cant Tell Me Nothing”

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket50 Cent disses Master P, refuses to "tone down" lyrics
In the aftermath of the Don Imus controversy, many a Hip-Hop artist has taken the step to attempt to tone down their language in music. 50 Cent was asked by reporters at a BET Awards press conference about the situation, and had some sharp words to say in return.
“Are you familiar with politics? Are you familiar with the President’s No. 2 man? You’re familiar with him resigning based on him using, maybe what we’d call a dating service? Maybe he’s hanging out with hoes that we mention in the music. If that doesn’t make you aware of a situation that exists….”

“Music is a mirror, and hip-hop is a reflection of the environment that we grew up in. It’s the harsh realities that end up in the music,” he added. “If I ask you to paint a picture of the American flag and not use the color red, you’re gonna have a difficult time. To capture what we try to capture in the art form, I’m sure some conservative Americans can’t [identify] with it because of their lifestyle and the way they’ve actually been brought up, and they haven’t been exposed to those realities.”

When Master P, who is among those who have agreed to drop the vulgarity, was used as an example, 50 laughed, saying: “Well Master P doesn’t sell CDs anymore.” “You can tell him I said it. Cameras is rollin’ right?...Curtis, June 26.”

Fab spoke to MTV recently about his new Def Jam album “From Nothin To Somethin”, and his upcoming plans for the project, and what life has been like for him in between albums. “We got to work with a lot of people we felt would make the album better. Production-wise, the lineup is like the Yankees: Timbaland, Akon, Jermaine Dupri, Just Blaze, Polow Da Don, Neo ‘The Matrix.’ ... We got great features, too. Each person, I could hear them making the song better. Lil’ Mo, Cassidy … we got a very deep, well-rounded album.”

“I been through situations I never been in before in my life…I got shot, been arrested, been in a relationship. I’m past really rapping for my block or my projects. I’m trying to grow. We been working really hard. I took two months and worked in Miami , then I came back to New York and worked another three months.”

Fabolous shared the sentiment, adding: “It’s a great record… We get a lot of love across the country everywhere we play it. It leans towards the ladies, but it’s a swagger record. The fellas could dig it too. The fellas are picking up lines from it. They telling ladies, ‘I’m cool, but you make me a better person.’ I’m happy everybody is receiving it well.

“When you make a relationship song, it’s relatable…A lot of people have been in the position when you’ve been the main person or the mistress. Or maybe you had somebody on the side … at least once in their life. It’s just relatable music. Same thing with ‘Make Me Better.’ You find that person in your life, then the haters, their antennas go up.”

Scheduled to drop on June 10th, This looks to be one of F-A-B’s most promising albums.

Kanye West’s new LP “Graduation” is scheduled to release on September 18th, and even his mom is pleased with the outcome. In a recent interview with MTV, Kanye and his mother spoke about the new album. “This Graduation album is his best ever — musically, as well as the lyrics,” she said. With that kind of support, and videos with Hype Williams, Kanye might just do as he says. “We already shot two videos,” “Me and Hype [Williams] went out, we shot nine days. We were out in Japan, we were out in the desert. We’re taking it serious.”

Kanye kept a lid on song titles, but he did confirm that a few of the rumored collaborations for the album were true. He has Coldplay’s Chris Martin on a few tracks, such as “Homecoming” and “The Glory”, the latter of which was originally set to appear on Commons new LP.

“I’m graduating from a school called ‘Universe City,’ ” West explained of the Graduation concept. “I think the sound is bigger this time. It’s bigger and simpler, where the notes really connect with you and I say lines … I know the power of my words, so when I rap, I know it’s gonna impact the world. I know I’m gonna be performing anywhere from the Summer Jam stage [at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium] to [New York nightclub] Speed to the House of Blues in L.A., to London to Brazil to Ireland. ...

I’m making music for somebody sitting in a car on their way to work trying to get through traffic and my music is helping them zone out, to a 60,000-seater where I’m opening up for the Rolling Stones or U2. I’m not talking about you two — I’m talking about U2 the group. Like I say, ‘Why would I do a song with you two when I just got offstage with U2? I’m not even talking to you two.’ That’s how I feel.”

“I’m ready to take over the world once again,” he added. “I have a lot to say. I got a lot more music to make. I’m still going through stuff. People are still going through stuff. I make music people can relate to every day. My music just isn’t about my story. ... There’s not one artist in the world that has as much responsibility as me. When I deliver a piece of music, it has to connect with the most genres of music. I don’t care who you name.

If you name rap artists, their only responsibility is to rap crowds. If you name a pop artist, their only responsibility is to a pop crowd. If you name some French dance music, their responsibility is to the cool crowd. But I have to deliver songs. All these people are looking at me from super-middle America to the hipsters like, ‘What’s he gonna do next?”
